DLC diamond-like coating
DLC is an amorphous sub-stabilized material containing a certain percentage of sp3 carbon atom bonds (diamond structure) combined. It is characterized by high hardness, high chemical inertness and very low coefficient of friction and is widely used in various industrial fields.- Coating DLC | ta-C Ultra Hard | WcC | Super Lubrication | Wear Resistant Decorative Plating
Typical applications for DLC coatings
- High-quality transmission components, precision parts, medical equipment, aerospace components, etc.
- Ultra-smooth, low coefficient of friction for machining sticky cutting tools, dies and stamping tools
- <Low-temperature PVD nano-coating process at <200°C for low-temperature tempered workpieces
Differences between WcC ( ), Ta-C, DLC (a-c:H) and diamond coatings
- WcC, Ta-C, a-c:H are all a classification of DLC, it’s just customary to make the distinction artificially
- WcC is a customized PVD coating developed by Naxos for the cell phone industry.
- Film thickness affects the color of Ta-C coatings
Type | Hardness: HV | Film thickness: μm | Antioxidant temperature | Coefficient of friction | Color | Suitable for processing materials |
WcC | 1000-1300 | 1-2 | 700 | 0.15 | Dark gray | Coating developed for micro-diameter tools <1mm, suitable for machining stainless steel, titanium, aluminum alloys. |
Ta-C | 4000-6500 | 0.5-1 | 550 | 0.1 | color | Suitable for non-ferrous metals such as aluminum and aluminum alloys with high silicon content, carbon fibers, copper, etc. |

DLC Applications
DLC nanocoatings are usually categorized by the ratio of sp3 to sp2 bonds and hydrogen content. Diamond is sp3 bonded and graphite is sp2. the hardness of the coating usually increases when the sp3 ratio increases. dLC coatings are sub-stable materials, and heating induces amorphous recrystallization and phase change towards sp2 graphite.
DLC Coating FAQs
▼ 01 How thick is the DLC coating? Why do some companies say that DLC hardness can go up to 4000HV while yours is 2000HV?
Tool-plated DLC is typically 1-3 microns thick, which includes some of the thickness of the priming layer. The surface hardness of DLC varies slightly from company to company, usually between 1800HV and 2200HV. Decorative plated DLC is within 1 micron; however, closer to 0.5 micron, the DLC will appear as a dazzle, or heptachromatic DLC. uniform, varying colors that reflect the film thickness of the DLC.
