DLC is a general term for conventional hydrogen-containing carbon films, which are usually dominated by SP2 bonds, with a thick film of 1-5 μm, and are commonly used for air dry friction. And ta-C is mainly based on SP3 bond, the hardness is between 4500-7500HV, the thick film is usually below 1μm, and shows seven-color dazzling color. In the vicinity of 20nm, it can even realize the transparency of visible light band above 90%; it is commonly used in ultra-thin ultra-hard protective coatings such as microdiamonds.

DLC is a highly customizable film system that can be realized by changing the film lattice structure, elemental references and coating process to achieve carbon films with different properties, such as 8 μm ultra-thick DLC or ta-C (the hardness is usually reduced to less than 3500 HV). Some can realize super lubricating DLC below 0.05, or super hydrophobic DLC with F. Or high temperature resistant DLC with silicon etc. with a temperature resistance of 450°.
